Many women feel that their breasts are saggy, low, or too heavy. If you have sagging breasts and struggle to find a bra that actually fits and is comfortable to wear, you may have considered a breast lift (also known as mastopexy). Drooping (saggy) breasts, or breast ptosis, is especially common in women who have had children or significant weight gain/loss.
But, if you get a breast lift, will you have enough volume? Will it look right without an implant? Well, that depends.
Facts You Should Know About A Breast Lift
The term mastopexy means to reshape/restore the breasts. The goal of the surgeon during a mastopexy is to reshape the breast and remove extra skin to create perkier, rounder-looking breasts.
This procedure requires anesthesia and includes incisions around the areola with a vertical line and extension into the fold. It is typically referred to as a lollipop or anchor incision.
There are more scars involved in a breast lift compared to a breast augmentation. However, with time the scars fade and in most cases are not really noticeable. Dr. Shah will provide scar gel to use after surgery, and he also help treat unfavorable scars with a steroid or laser treatments.
Most women will say the tradeoff of having perkier breasts is worth having the scars.
So, Do You Need To Use Implants?
Just performing a breast lift without implants can provide a tremendous improvement in the appearance of the breasts. Many women are concerned about not having enough fullness in the upper pole of the breasts. Many times, an implant will help correct that issue.
However, we need to discuss natural breast lifts. Therefore, we oftentimes use patients own fat to create upper pole and cleavage fill. This is called fat grafting or fat transfer. The fat is harvested from the stomach or armpit area and then purified to small clean specimen and then injected into the breasts.
The Advantages Of A Natural Breast Lift
Some of the advantages of natural breast lifting are:
- You won’t have to deal with implant-related issues.
- You can still get a nice enhancement using breast tissue. This of course assuming there is breast tissue to work with.
- It may take a little bit more time because of harvesting the fat, but the secondary benefits of body contouring with minimal foreign body reaction to own fat is very appealing to patients.
Consider An Internal Bra!
A scaffold or “mesh” can be used to help support the breast known as an “internal bra”. This absorbable P4HB mesh (GalaFLEX) is FDA-approved and generally lasts about 1-2 years depending on the person. Learn more about The Internal Bra.
How Long Do Breasts Lifts Last?
Breast lifts can last for many years, and most patients should not need a revision. If patients change weight or have other body changing events such as pregnancy, your breasts may change, and a revision can be performed.
What Is The Recovery Like?
Most patients will need approximately a week off of work after a breast lift procedure. Total recovery time is approximately 6 weeks.
