In older people, or those exposed to large amounts of sun or stress, wrinkled and sagging skin can develop on the face and neck, forming folds along the laugh line or jaw line, better known as jowls. It is usually performed in a surgery center under local anesthesia supplemented by a mild sedative or general anesthesia, depending on the patient's preference.  Facelifts involve an incision made along the front of the ear that extends around each ear to the scalp. The excess skin and fat are removed and the muscle layer is tightened as needed. The incisions are closed with very fine sutures that are removed in one week. Swelling and minor discomfort last a few days, and patients are usually able to return to work in one week.
